What is a Host Home Provider?

A host home provider is a single person or a couple with or without a family owning or renting their own home, and having the interest in supporting one or two people in their home. In either case the host home provider can support a person by providing the necessary supervision and services as outlined in the person’s plan of services. A host home must meet the necessary HUD requirements. A maximum of 2 individuals receiving services can be in the same host home but each person must have their own bedroom. The individuals will typically share a bathroom and common areas in the house. It is important to establish a positive relationship that promotes independence and community involvement.

A host home provider must have a clear background and a good driving record. They must have a caring nature and the ability to help others to live as independent as possible. Most of the people receiving services have a structured day or work program away from the home. The provider may be responsible for transporting the person to their day or work program. It is necessary for the host home to provide the necessary supervision and provide opportunities for the persons to engage in community activities. The host home provider is responsible for taking the person to their medical, dental and other necessary appointments.
